Patent Management
Matthew brings direct experience of managing patents as commercial assets, not just legal instruments. Across a global industry, he has overseen submission strategy, portfolio management and the disputes that arise when intellectual property is contested or infringed. He understands that protection is only valuable if it is commercially defensible and aligned to where the business is actually creating advantage.
At board level, he:
• Challenges leadership to align patent strategy with genuine commercial differentiation, not just defensibility
• Tests whether a portfolio protects what the market values, or simply what was easiest to file
• Identifies gaps in coverage before competitors or disputes expose them
• Brings commercial judgement to decisions on whether to pursue, settle or contest infringement
• Ensures IP investment is prioritised against actual business risk, not treated as a blanket cost
• Holds leadership accountable for managing patents as assets with a return, not a compliance exercise
He is particularly effective where a business holds valuable IP without a clear strategy behind it, or where a dispute has exposed gaps in how that protection was managed.
